Why Trilium?

I've been really disorganized with my notes. Being a tech guy, I've always wanted a location where I could just store text: whether it be configs, code, templates I have for job offers, corny 2000s pickup linesβ€”look, I just want something to place the things I write on.

2023 was the year I started getting more and more organized. I'm an adult and I've decided that a little organization is in due. Then I had a problem: where do I organize all of my notes? Some obvious answers came into play:

  • Google Keep
  • Discord(???)
  • Apple Notes
  • Evernote
  • Microsoft OneNote

OK, so those are our contenders. Let's break those down:

PlatformProsCons
Google Keep
  • Good-ish Android support
  • OK website
  • Limited functionality when taking notes
  • Limited organization capabilities
  • Bro what if my account gets shut down πŸ’€
Discord
  • Easy to access
  • Notes can be organized in one Discord server
  • How do you even organize notes here?
  • Bro what if my account gets shut down πŸ’€
Apple Notes
  • Looks stylish
  • Instagram-worthy
  • How tf do I open it on Linux, Windows, Android?
  • Bro what if my account gets shut down πŸ’€
Evernote
  • Green logo
Microsoft OneNote
  • Good integration if you use Windows
  • I don't use Windows (anymore, despite using Windows Phone)
  • Not going back there again
  • Bro what if my account gets shut down πŸ’€

So there is one glaring problem with all of those: they can shut down my account at any given moment. Plus, I don't control my data there. Since I'm a DevOps engineer who's looking to show more stuff on my portfolio and on LinkedIn, Trilium was the perfect project for me. I can maintain it via a Docker image, I can make backups of the folder via Restic, and I can host it on my domain via Cloudflare. It meets my needs and it's a good test of my skills.

Thus, here we are.

PS

My Trillium instance is named β€œTime Variance Authority” because I think they're cool.
